The Al Thumama Stadium, one of the eight FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 venues, received the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) five-star rating on the day it was announced. The sustainability rating is another indication of Qatar's commitment to hosting carbon-neutral World Cup, as Al Bayt and Education City stadiums also have five-star ratings. Al Janoub Stadium and the Khalifa International Stadium have been awarded GSAS certificates, which have four stars. GSAS is the very first performance-based and integrated framework that is based on performance Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to assess and rating infrastructure and buildings to determine their sustainability impact. The framework was developed in collaboration with GORD, the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD). In a press conference following the event Eng. Bodour Al Meer Director of Sustainability for the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy confirmed that the organizers had met FIFA standards. "I'm proud that we are getting five stars, exceeding the FIFA requirement," Eng. Al Meer said. "FIFA requires all stadiums to obtain at least one Green Building certification in design and construction. However, our stadiums are receiving three types of certification - one for design and construction as well as one for construction management and one operating. FIFA requires that stadiums get four stars. For Al Thumama Stadium, we're receiving five stars right now," she added. Brahim Jaida who was the architect for the stadium, stated that this award set an example for stadiums to come around the globe. "It's an amazing time to receive five stars. Attained five stars means that the stadium is the most sustainable score for any stadium constructed not just in Qatar or in the regionin all of the world. There is no stadium that has achieved the highest score. This is a huge honor for us. We are very proud to say that all stadiums that have been constructed in Qatar have four or five stars. They're all sustainable and they will set the standard for future stadiums that are built around the globe," Jaida said. He also pointed out that all stadiums that will be built for Qatar 2022 will have distinct identitiesthat reflect different aspects of the Middle East and the Far East culture. "This stadium, in my opinion does not only represent us, but also the more general cultural diversity from Asia's Middle as well as the Far East. We always say that"the World Cup in Qatar represents not just us but also the entire area of Asia."
